Killed in action on Thursday 18th March 1943 aged 25.
In January 1943 the 2/5th Battalion, by now renamed the 5th Battalion, joined the 1st British Army in Tunisia and was followed shortly by the 2nd Battalion. The Battalions took part in severe and difficult fighting, in particular at Sedjenane and the Medjez Plain and suffered many casualties before the remnants of the German Armies capitulated at Cap Bon.
Burial Place
Ernest is buried in Bone War Cemetery, Algeria.
Bone was occupied by Allied forces on 12 November 1942 and became important as a supply port, and for its airfield. The 70th General Hospital was there during the early months of 1943. Bone War Cemetery contains 868 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
